Sheppey United Football Club confirm Steve Manning has taken over as chairman from Tony Hughes

There’s been a change at the top for Sheppey United after the club named a new chairman.

Hughes was appointed chairman of the club in the summer of 2023, stepping in after the departure of Matt Smith.

He went on to oversee a memorable FA Cup run, culminating in a first-round televised match at Holm Park against Walsall, while the team also pushed for a play-off place in the Isthmian League South East division.

In another reshuffle, Hughes is now handing over to Mr Manning, who is a season ticket holder at the club.

A statement from The Ites on Saturday said: “Sheppey United can confirm that Tony Hughes has left his position as club chairman with immediate effect having been in position for the last 18 months.

“We thank him for his past efforts and wish him well for the future.

“Steve Manning, a successful Sheppey based business man and Sheppey United supporter/season ticket holder will step into the Interim Chairman role.

“Over time Steve will meet with all key personnel at the Club and sponsors, and help us see the remainder of the season through and plan for next season, plans of which are already in discussion.”

Steve will be assisted by David Ingram junior, another local business man, as well as Lee Allen – during the interim period, with a review end of the season – with Lee expressing a wish to continue his other Club roles.

The club - whose first team is managed by director and co-owner Ernie Batten - has also confirmed the appointment of Kevin Long as club treasurer.

A month ago the club announced the departure of Ralph Valerio, their director of football.

Sheppey United’s game at East Grinstead was postponed on Saturday. They are due to play away to Billericay Town on Tuesday night in the Velocity Cup quarter-final.
