A2 reopened following fire in Teynham

The A2 was closed in both directions following a serious fire which saw people evacuated from their homes overnight.

Firefighters were called to the blaze which had broken out in a workshop in London Road, Teynham, near Sittingbourne, at about 1.40am.

Around 20 people living nearby were evacuated from their homes and advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke in the air.

They were allowed back in at about 3.30am.

The A2 was shut between Western Link Road in Faversham and Fowler Welch Industrial in Teynham, Kent Highways said at about 4.30am. It reopened just after 7am.

Six fire engines and a height vehicle were sent to the blaze.

At 7am, firefighters were still there damping down hotspots.

A fire spokesman said: "The advice for residents to close windows and doors has been lifted, and the section of the A2 London Road that was closed, is now open."

"There are no reported injuries and a fire investigation will be carried out to establish how the fire started," he added.
