A STATIONARY ambulance on a 999 call in Sittingbourne overturned today with its patient inside after a lorry smashed into the back of it.

A 70-year-old woman in the ambulance, as well as the two paramedics dealing with her, were trapped inside. They were released by firefighters and flown by air ambulance to Maidstone Hospital with head injuries which were not thought to be life-threatening.

The ambulance had been called to the Snipes Hill area to deal with the pensioner who had fallen down on the pavement.

The lorry made off from the scene towards Teynham. The vehicle was later traced but police are still looking for the driver.

The A2 at the traffic lights was closed off after the accident and traffic diversions set up.
