Car travels wrong way on M2 London-bound between Sittingbourne/Maidstone and Gillingham

Drivers are being warned to expect delays on the M2 this morning after a car briefly travelled the wrong way along the motorway.

Highways England reported that the London-bound carriageway between junctions 5 for Sittingbourne and Maidstone and junction 4 for Gillingham were affected.

It's understood a car was heading coastbound on the London-bound carriageway.

A Kent Police spokesman confirmed that there was no threat to safety and officers were not needed at the scene.

It comes as the M2 coastbound remains down to one lane following the discovery of a pothole which left dozens of drivers stranded yesterday.

The defect was meant to have been repaired, but many motorists were caught out after heavy rainfall caused it to open up again.

It is the second incident of a motorist driving in the opposite direction on a Kent motorway after a police car was rammed earlier today on the M20.
