Comedian Lee Hurst suspended from Twitter after 'offensive' Greta Thunberg tweet

Kent comedian Lee Hurst has been suspended from Twitter after an "offensive" tweet about environmental activist Greta Thunberg.

The Sittingbourne comic suggested that "as soon as" the 18-year-old activist "discovers" sex, she will "stop complaining about the single use plastic".

His tweet has sparked a flurry of outrage on the social media platform, and his account has now been suspended due to an alleged violation of Twitter's rules.

Many have pointed out condoms "aren’t even made out of plastic", while others have slammed the supposed joke as "very, very creepy".

One Twitter user said: "What he tweeted about Greta Thunberg was genuinely unfunny and gross."

Another branded Hurst "attention seeking", while labelling Thunberg "one of the most inspirational human beings alive".

Presenter and journalist Jeremy Vine tweeted: "I really wish I hadn’t looked to see why Lee Hurst is trending", while actor Christine Bottomley branded the tweet "awful" and "not on".

Others still have criticised Hurst for "sexually insulting a young woman" at a time when women across the country are speaking out courageously about their experiences of sexual harassment, following the tragic death of Sarah Everard.

It is not the first time Hurst, best known for his role on quiz show They Think It’s All Over, has caused controversy on social media.

In October, he sparked a social media storm by refusing to wear a face mask in Morrisons.

His tweet about a run-in with a security guard at the supermarket sparked a storm of criticism from other Twitter users, including Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan - who branded him ‘a selfish pr**k’.
