Grandmother's plea for Good Samaritans to come forward after mobility scooter crash in Borden Lane, Sittingbourne

A grandmother who was knocked off her mobility scooter by a car is trying to trace two Good Samaritans who stopped to help her.

Pennie Simpson had been travelling on the path along Borden Lane, Sittingbourne, on her way home from Tesco Express when the vehicle, which was reversing off a driveway, threw her to the pavement.

The 57-year-old, who has lived in Borden for the last seven years, says she always checks driveways but did not see the car back up until it was too late.

It crashed into her left-hand side, leaving her with bruised ribs and a scrape on her right forearm. She also hit her head when she fell.

Meanwhile, her scooter – which she needs for getting around due to medical conditions including osteoarthritis, was also damaged, with one of the wheels coming off.

Ms Simpson fears what might have happened to her if it weren’t for the intervention of two passers-by.

She said: “I hit my head, so all I remember is a young lady and a young man both stopping their cars on each side of the road.

“They helped me up and put me back on my mobility scooter.

“Accidents happen, and I don’t blame the driver. It was horrible, but I’m still here.

“My brother has spoken to him and he was genuinely sorry and has even offered to pay for my scooter, which is currently at a friend's house, so there are no hard feelings.”

A resident who had come to the scene offered to call an ambulance for the grandmother of 13, but she refused.

Instead a neighbour drove her to Sittingbourne Memorial Hospital, where they checked her over.

She said: “I was in shock, so the doctor kept me there for around an hour and gave me painkillers.

“I had to go back to the hospital a few days later as my ribs were still hurting.”

She was still taking painkillers for her bruised ribs, almost three weeks on from when the crash took place around 3pm on May 10.

Now, Ms Simpson is seeking the people who helped her so that she can thank them.

She said: “I would like to say thank you very much.

“I live for my grandchildren, and I’m just so glad to still be here.

“I’m really grateful for what they’ve done because it was a scary time.

“I don't think a lot of people get appreciated in this world now so I’d like to thank them.”
