Fire crews spent the night battling a large straw fire near Sittingbourne.
Flames ripped through 2,000 tonnes of baled straw in the field in Bashford Barn Lane in Bredgar at 9.40pm yesterday.
The flaming stack then collapsed into the road, prompting firefighters to call police and highways teams.
Initially, two fire engines were sent to the scene but one crew remained there until nearly 8am this morning.
The hay was allowed to burn out under controlled conditions overnight, while crews carried out "a watching brief".
There are no reports of any injuries and no buildings have been damaged.
The road is closed between Ruins Barn Road, Bexon Lane and The Street, and is likely to remain shut for the next few days.
