Delays on A249 Sheppey-bound between Detling Hill and Stockbury Roundabout in Sittingbourne due to car fire

A car fire caused long delays for drivers along a stretch of road.

Traffic was stationary on the A249 Sheppey-bound between Detling Hill, Maidstone and the Stockbury Roundabout, Sittingbourne.

The incident is understood to have happened at around 1pm near the Bimbury Lane turn-off.

Queues had been forming since then as traffic was temporarily held.

At the time, one driver told KentOnline that people were already getting out of their cars.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “Two fire engines attended and crews, wearing breathing apparatus, used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

“There are no reported injuries and the cause is not yet known.”

By 2.30pm the road had been cleared and traffic returned to normal.
