Crash on A249 closes road and junction 5 of the M2 for Sittingbourne

A serious crash between a car and a motorbike closed a section of the A249.

Police and paramedics were called to the accident on the northbound carriageway at around 3.20pm.

An air ambulance was called to the scene.

Both carriageways were closed as well as the junction 5 slip road off the M2.

Traffic was queuing on the A249 back to the M20 and the road was expected to remain closed for several hours for investigation work.

National Highways said at 10.53pm that the road had reopened. It said: "The #A249 in #Kent is now OPEN northbound between the #M2 and the #A2 following the earlier serious collision.

"There are no significant delays in the area. Thanks for your patience if you were held up."

Earlier, motorists were being turned around by traffic officers.

National Highways had said: "If you're in traffic within the closure this is being turned around. Please wait until you are instructed to turn."

Road users were advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol on road signs all follow these directions:

  • Exit the A249 at the Stockbury Roundabout onto the northbound Maidstone Road exit towards Sittingbourne.
  • Remain on this road until it meets the Key Street Roundabout where it will negotiate the roundabout and exit into the northbound Sheppey Way.
  • Remain on this until the roundabout junction at Bobbing where it can resume northbound on the A249.
