Man from Loughborough appears in court accused of attempted murder after man was stabbed multiple times during an incident in Leigh Road, Sittingbourne, more than two years ago

A man has appeared in court accused of attempted murder after another man was stabbed multiple times.

Alex Whitby, was 19 when he was arrested for allegedly stabbing Stephen Smith during an incident in Leigh Road, Sittingbourne, on October 28, 2022.

Police were called to the road at around 12.40am and found Mr Smith with serious injuries.

He was flown to hospital during the early hours after being treated by paramedics on the ground and was said at the time to be in critical condition.

Whitby was arrested at the scene and one witness described seeing a huge emergency service response the following day, with forensic teams spotted along the road.

Whitby, now 21, was initially bailed over the incident but was later charged with attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm and appeared before magistrates in Medway on Thursday, February 20.

Whitby, now of Boyer Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire, didn’t enter any pleas in relation to the charges and the case against him was sent to Maidstone Crown Court to be dealt with.

He is expected to appear for a preliminary hearing on March 21 and was granted bail until then.
