This is what the new cameras on the A249 will be used for

New cameras have appeared on a stretch of the A249.

Reports on social media over last weekend raised concerns among residents that they might have been used to monitor and enforce speed limits.

The devices have been placed on the route before the Stockbury roundabout, Maidstone-bound, near Sittingbourne.

However, this week Highways England confirmed they were replacement cameras for existing traffic monitoring devices.

One of the things that seemed to alarm people is the change in the colour of the machines, as the old cameras are grey and the new ones are white.

A traffic monitoring camera is a method of CCTV used to keep an eye on road use.

The images are recorded and then sent back to a monitoring centre which receives the live video.

If there are reports of an accident or other disruption, the cameras can be used to see if there are safety concerns.
