A pensioner has appeared in court accused of running over a woman and then colliding with her head as she lay on the ground injured.
Terry Andrews was at the wheel of his Land Rover Discovery Sport in the Morrisons car park in Mill Road, Sittingbourne, when it is alleged he drove dangerously and hit Margaret Newman on a zebra crossing twice.
It is alleged after initially knocking her over, the 72-year-old then moved his car while Mrs Newman, who suffered a broken pelvis and other injuries, was still on the floor and his vehicle then collided with her head.
Andrews, of Sandford Road, Sittingbourne, was originally charged with causing serious injury by careless driving.
However, when he appeared in the dock at Medway Magistrates’ Court on February 20, the charge was reassessed by the Crown Prosecution Service and changed to the more serious charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Andrews pleaded not guilty to the offence.
James Nichols, prosecuting said: “This case is not suitable to be heard in this court and should be sent to the crown court to be dealt with.
“The victim suffered a broken pelvis in four places and had problems with her eyesight.”
Magistrates agreed the case should be sent to the crown court to be dealt with and Andrews is expected to appear for a preliminary hearing at Maidstone Crown Court on March 21.
He was granted bail until then.
