Petition for action as Simpsons Crossing at Bobbing, near Sittingbourne, stays shut

There have been calls for urgent action after a well-used footpath crossing a railway remains closed having been temporarily shut in March over safety concerns.

Cllr James Hunt, who represents The Meads, in Sittingbourne, says it is “completely wrong” that a permanent solution has not yet been found for Simpsons Crossing at Bobbing.

In March, Network Rail said the temporary emergency closure of the crossing followed “a high number of recorded incidents, 53 over the past three years, many involving children and vulnerable users, which, with nearly 200 trains travelling through per day at high speeds, poses a danger to life”.

The crossing, near the A249, has been the scene of several near misses and deaths in recent years. In 2017 alarming footage was released of youngsters lying on the train tracks and taking photographs.

Network Rail said it was looking to “find a safer convenient route across the line”. There has also been talk of installing a warning light system or a footbridge.

However, Cllr Hunt says the rail firm and Kent County Council (KCC) need to quickly agree on a long-term fix.

He said: “There needs to be a public consultation from KCC, as it is a public right of way that has been closed off, and by Network Rail.

“Myself nor residents were given any notice of the closure, and I have still not had any correspondence.”

He added: “This is completely wrong and KCC and Network Rail need to move things on and find a permanent solution.

“Whilst I understand the safety concerns, not having a crossing at all isn’t an option in my view. The Meads lacks sports facilities and developments have been built in the knowledge that public rights of way gave access to the playing fields accessed across the railway line.

“Makeshift footpaths have been being made next to the A249 and slip roads, which is dangerous and this will continue if an appropriate alternative isn’t sorted out.”

Cllr Hunt has set up a petition to highlight the issue and “ensure there is a safe and accessible route as soon as possible”.

Network Rail confirmed it was still reviewing options for the crossing with stakeholders.
