Police were earlier asking motorists who had driven along the Sheppey Way within the last 24 hours to check their vehicles for signs of a collision.

Detective Inspector Chris Dovey said: "We are working on a number of lines of inquiry to establish the cause of death.

"One possibility is that the deceased was involved in a road traffic collision."

However, officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit have since examined the scene and said it is not believed a vehicle was involved.

The road was closed from the Kingsferry Roundabout to the junction of Old Ferry Road until 12.30pm.

Officers are compiling a report for the coroner.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference 14-170.
