There are fresh hopes that Milton Regis Post Office could reopen in a matter of weeks.
Ward councillor Adam Tolhurst says an interested party has made it through to the second round of the application process and must now submit relevant documents before November 10 in order to secure an interview with the Post Office by the middle of the month.
It is hoped a decision will be reached by December.
Cllr Tolhurst said: "I can't reveal who the person is but if successful the post office will reopen in the High Street but in a different location."
The post office closed on July 12 when the sub-postmaster retired and no one was found to replace him.
The business based in a Grade II listed building with living accommodation above has been on the market for more than two years but a buyer is yet to come forward.
Cllr Tolhurst launched an appeal to businesses and other people to come forward and take the business on or for someone to set the service up.
A spokesman for Post Office Ltd said: "There is no further update at the moment - the branch remains temporarily closed and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may cause."
A new post box has been installed at Milton Regis High Street near the Court Hall Museum.
