A racist thug who smashed a glass bottle on a shop worker and threatened his victim with a knife has been jailed.
Connor Openshaw was apprehended by a member of staff as he took a four-pack of beers from the Co-op in Gadby Road shopping promenade, in Sittingbourne, without paying.
The colleague took hold of the beer, but was pushed by the 23-year-old, who grabbed several packets of crisps as he left the shop.
The worker followed him out but was struck on the arm with a glass bottle, causing a cut.
Openshaw, of no fixed address, then blurted out racial abuse before leaving the scene.
However, the victim's ordeal was not over as the thief returned, threatened the victim with a knife, and smashed the shop window with a wooden plank.
The shoplifter fled again but was tracked down and arrested by police.
He was charged with several offences relating to the incident, which occurred on Sunday, April 6, and was remanded in custody.
On Thursday, May 29, Openshaw admitted to theft, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage, possessing a knife in a public place and a public order offence at Medway Magistrates’ Court.
He was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay the victim £100 in compensation.
Investigating officer PC Dan Quinn said: “Openshaw is an offensive individual whose conduct in the Co-op was truly appalling.
“Shop workers should not have to suffer violence and abuse, and offenders should expect a robust response from Kent Police.
“His possession of a knife was a major factor in his sentencing, and those who choose to follow his example will receive a prompt arrest and court appearance.”
