Family transforms garden at Sittingbourne home into ghoulish graveyard to raise money for charity

A family has transformed their front garden into a ghoulish graveyard and will open it up for visitors this weekend.

For the third year running, the Ameys’ family home in The Finches, off Highsted Road, Sittingbourne , will play host to the Finches Rest Cemetery.

Dad Robert Amey, 47, said: “It started out as a hobby for me, I just enjoyed making the displays but, with everything going on this year, my wife Lauren suggested we should also try and raise money for charity.

“So, I’ve decided to go a bit more crazy than normal – the display’s probably tripled in size this year.”

The Ameys have chosen to raise money for The Autism Apprentice charity.

Lauren, 36, said: “Our daughter Jessica has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and auditory processing disorder and the charity has helped us immensely with schooling and getting the right support in place for her – they’ve helped in every aspect of her wellbeing and have been absolutely amazing.

The mother-of-three added: “As they helped us so much this year, we came up with the idea to do our display for a reason.”

Robert, who is himself going through the assessment process for ASD and ADHD, said: “This year’s display includes an old skeleton lady rocking in a chair, a cauldron creep stirring the pot and much more – watch out for the zombie hands that’ll try to grab you too.”

This weekend, visitors are invited for a terrifying tour for the cost of a donation to the charity. “Anyone’s welcome,” Lauren said. “We’ll let groups of six go round to keep within the guidelines and families can walk through in larger groups as long as they live together.”

“We’ll also have sweets and charity leaflets that we will be giving out.”

The display will be open from 5pm-10pm on Friday, and from 4pm-10pm on Saturday. Slots can also be pre-booked for those with sensory issues between noon and 4pm on Saturday.
