She was rescued by Swale Council's stray dog service and weighed just 3.7kg with all of her bones prominent.

Her teeth and left eye were also showing signs of decay and damage, which was thought to be due to the hole in her head.

She was taken to Bobbing Hill Veterinary Surgery in Sittingbourne where the vets believed her injury was due to either a ballistic type or a severe dog bite.

On Monday Doris reached her goal weight of 5kg and was able to undergo surgery. March 20

The stray dog service posted online: "An X-ray confirmed that no ballistic shrapnel had been left behind, so the hole in her head was closed and five damaged teeth were removed."

They said despite the condition she was found in, Doris is still very trusting and has remained calm and friendly.

Doris was handed over to Cinque Ports Rescue, and donations towards her vet bills can be made here.

The service added: "Thankfully the surgery was a success and she was already awake and alert when it was time to go home.

"She's being closely monitored and as long as her recovery goes well, she'll be scheduled for spaying in another eight weeks. What a tough little cookie."
