Dispersal order issued for Sittingbourne after concerns over anti-social behaviour

Ongoing problems with anti-social behaviour have led to a town centre dispersal order being extended for another two days.

It comes after concerns from residents and business owners over problems with nuisance behaviour in Sittingbourne.

The extra powers for police came in at 7.30pm on Tuesday (February 18) and was to last until 7.30pm today (February 20).

However, it has since been extended for another 48 hours meaning it will be in place until 7.30pm on Saturday (February 22).

It covers the town centre including the A2, West Street, High Street, East Street, Sittingbourne Retail Park, Eurolink Way, Mill Way and Albany Park.

A dispersal order gives officers additional powers to move on anyone causing a nuisance and, if necessary, arrest those who return to the area.

It comes after a youth climbed onto a roof in the town centre on Monday (February 17) and fired a catapult at passers-by below.

Officers on patrol in the town attended, but the boy had gone. Inquiries are ongoing to identify the teenager.

Inspector Julia Bassindale said: “Our officers have received recent reports from residents and business owners about incidents of anti-social behaviour and disorder, involving a minority of young people.

“The town centre is frequently patrolled and we will not hesitate to require anyone causing a nuisance to leave the area.

“They are then risking arrest if they choose to return.

“Our constables are also working with schools and youth organisations and, where a child is found to be consistently causing an issue in the town, the officers will be speaking to parents and issuing warning notices where appropriate.”
