A village could go from not having a fish and chip shop to having two after new plans were lodged.
Shanmugalingam Sathees, who runs the Nisa Local convenience shop in Newington High Street, wants to transform the building next door at no.39 into an eatery.
But just a few doors down, at no.19, there is another scheme to bring a chippy to the High Street, which flanks the A2.
Rosaria Rodrigues applied for the planning permission to convert no.19 in May 2023.
The building had been Acorns estate agents and before that, the Wheatsheaf pub.
Mrs Rodrigues’ plans received the thumbs-up from Swale council in December that year but the restaurant has not yet opened.
She has until December 2026 to start work before the permission runs out.
The building Mr Sathees wants to transform, meanwhile, is a three-storey detached building formerly the home of Total Solutions.
It has been empty since December.
Cllr Richard Palmer (Reform), who represents the village on Swale council, believes there is demand for a chippy.
He said: “I know people travel to Upchurch Fish and Chips, so that could happen here.
“It’s a business coming to the village, and people do like their fish and chips, so that’s good.”

If approved the chippy would join Mings Chinese takeaway and Massala Indian Takeaway in the High Street.
Swale council has set a deadline of June 5 by which to determine the planning application.
