They will be carbon neutral because they are air-tight, have well-insulated walls and feature solar panel roofs which let the properties generate their own electricity. They will also have hot water heated by an air source heat pump to further reduce electricity consumption.

The new development of three-bed family homes for rent are being delivered by Public Sector in partnership with NetZero Buildings. It is due to be completed by the end of January 2021.

Public Sector's chief executive officer Adam Cunnington said: “As we all begin the economic recovery from Covid-19, we are extremely excited about delivering Kent’s new zero carbon neighbourhood.

“Our country not only faces a crisis in the quantity of homes but also the quality as well as a global climate emergency. We’re proud to be leading the way with a new generation of housing which helps to tackle these problems."

The homes will be built off site in a factory in Cambridge using modern methods of construction with Homes England part-funding the development.

Groundworks have now started on the site with the installation of services. The foundations will be laid soon.

NetZero Buildings has been producing net zero carbon and energy positive premises in Britain since 2014.

The firm's CEO Steve Murphy said: “This industry-leading housing scheme in Kent is a landmark development for us.

“For more than six years we have pioneered some of the most energy-efficient buildings in Britain. We are now widely recognized as the only off-site manufacturer delivering the true meaning of net zero buildings.
