Sittingbourne sign goalkeeper Tom Benham and defender Corey Walters-Wright

Sittingbourne have healthy competition for the No.1 jersey after signing another goalkeeper.

Tom Benham has joined from Canterbury just a week after the arrival of former Corinthian Casuals stopper Brad Comins.

The pair will battle it out over pre-season to start the Bostik South East campaign as first choice.

Manager Chris Lynch said: "Tom's a very good keeper and he's here to fight for the No.1 shirt.

"He had some experience of this level at Faversham last year and Brad played 17 games for Corinthian Casuals in the Premier Division, so we've got healthy competition.

"There's other clubs in our league who would put them straight in the team at No.1

"Tom's got some attributes I really like.

"He's not the tallest but he's sharp, he's quick, his kicking's very strong and his reaction saves are very good.

"You put him up against Brad, who's a lot taller, and in this division that can be important because a lot of goals come from set-plays or mistakes at the back.

"He offers height, he's great aerially and he's a great communicator.

"We've got two talented keepers who will complement and learn from each other."

Sittingbourne have also signed centre-half Corey Walters-Wright from Chatham.

He was a regular in a Chats team who won two cups and battled for the Southern Counties East title last season.

Lynch said: "Corey played a lot of games for Chatham and captained them five times.

"He's a great signing who will comfortably step up to this level.

"He'll be a good asset, he's still only 24 and he's had that leadership experience in the level below.

"He'd made his made up that he was looking for a new challenge this year.

"I had a conversation with him and he just needed time to assess his options.

"Several teams at our level wanted to talk to him but he came down, saw the project here and decided it was for him.

"We've got a very hungry squad with players who want to play at a higher level and it's really important to have that mentality.

"Everyone who puts on that shirt will run through brick walls for me.

"When the chips down and you're 1-0 or 2-0 down on a miserable Tuesday night, we've got players who can change the game and will play and fight to the end.

"A lot of teams won't have that."

Sittingbourne host National South new boys Tonbridge in their opening friendly on Saturday. Kick-off is 2.30pm.

Lynch said: "It would be great to see as many fans there as possible."
