Kent Kings aiming to win first-ever piece of major silverware in speedway's National Trophy

Kent Kings are on the verge of an historic week.

They put themselves in pole position to claim their first-ever national success after a 48-41 National Trophy win over Mildenhall Fen Tigers on Bank Holiday Monday.

Kings need two points to claim the trophy on Thursday at the Isle of Wight Warriors and have a second chance of glory, should they slip up, when the sides meet again at Central Park on Monday (6.30pm).

After back-to-back Trophy victories over seven-times winners Mildenhall, Kent are tied at the top of the group table on 10 points with last Monday’s opponents.

However the Suffolk side – despite a better points for and against record – are behind on the head-to-head and have completed their fixtures.

The potential spoilers are the Warriors, who are also in the mix.

Kings team boss Chris Hunt said: “We’ve got two very important matches coming up.

“The Mildenhall win was really important and we’re doing okay at the moment, we’re very happy. If we lose by six or less we get a point and a draw is two points but we’re going there to win.

“If we don’t win it at the Isle of Wight then we have a good chance at home against them on the Monday. Ideally we would have done it by then, but I am expecting that we will have to work hard for it.

“Technically, if they beat us home and away they could still win it but we fancy our chances. We’re fairly confident but we aren’t taking anything for granted. As a whole team, from one to seven, we should be favourites but you never can tell. It’s what happens on the day.

“This would be Kent’s first national success since starting in 2013 so it is really important.

“We have still got a couple of riders out but we’ve managed to carry on winning and the team spirit here is really good, probably as good as it has been before at Kent. We are all working for each other and determined to win the trophy.”
