Former Central Garage in Tenterden High Street could be replaced by 10 flats under new plans

A former high street garage which has sat abandoned for years will be replaced by 10 flats if new plans are approved.

Central Garage in Tenterden has been vacant since 2017 in a prime spot between Specsavers and the now-closed Keith Francis hairdressers.

But now James Clague Architects Ltd, on behalf of Bridgemore Land and Development, has submitted plans to Ashford Borough Council to flatten the site.

If approved, the 0.59-acre plot - which also features an empty three-bedroom detached house, a workshop and showroom - will be redeveloped with 10 flats in two blocks.

Eight properties would be built in one block with two in the other, and each flat would feature two bedrooms.

Twelve car parking and 10 cycle spaces are also proposed on the brownfield plot, which is within the Tenterden conservation area.

In planning documents submitted with the application, the architect company says: "The site offers opportunities for future residents to walk into the high street, accessing a range of services and facilities.

"The site is previously developed land in an area that is predominantly in residential and commercial use, and in its existing business use is no longer viable or appropriate and there is a need to make a more effective re-use of this land.

"In economic terms, the proposal will assist the high street with residents being ‘local spenders’ and helping to drive vitality and onward spend within the high street, supporting the functionality of Tenterden."

The proposal also includes plans for a large communal garden and patio area.

Access to the site will continue to be via Tenterden High Street, with an additional pedestrian access point provided off Bridewell Lane.
