Specsavers set to open in Tenterden's former HSBC bank

A new Specsavers branch looks set to finally open in a former town centre bank – but the plan has been described as "short-sighted".

The major glasses retailer is looking to launch the outlet in the old HSBC building in Tenterden.

The high street bank closed its branch in January 2017, with the building once considered to be a potential location for a cinema in the town.

But plans have now been submitted for the exterior of the building, which was due to open as the new opticians in early 2020.

New signs and branding will be added to the outside of the building, with a hanging sign near the road and several new air conditioning units at the rear of the building.

Fisch Design, which submitted the plans on behalf of Specsavers, says the opticians will open following the 'minor refurbishment works', although a date has not been specified.

The shop will be open between 8.30am and 6pm on weekdays, 9am to 5.30pm on Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sundays.

Reaction to the news in town has been mixed, with several residents quick to point out that Tenterden already has three opticians.

One resident remarked: "I thought an American diner would have been great for the kids and adults, we don't need another opticians in town."

Another said the building would have been a "perfect spot" for a cinema.

"Dare I say how short-sighted of those who own the building – they should put their philanthropic glasses on and help this town to thrive," they said.

Bosses behind plans for Tenterden's cinema say they are now looking at the Highbury Hall site, but the trust which runs the facility has criticised the scheme.
