Arrest made outside Aldi amid antisocial behaviour crackdown in Cliftonville, Margate

Arrests have been made amid a crackdown on antisocial behaviour in a seaside town.

On Friday evening, police spotted a man in Zion Place, Cliftonville, who had repeatedly violated a Community Protection Notice (CPN) intended to stop him from aggressively begging or harassing the public.

Ben Smith, 46, was arrested and later fined in court for two counts of breaching the CPN by blocking the pavement with a tent and obstructing a doorway on two occasions in February.

On Saturday, officers saw a man in Northdown Road who was wanted on suspicion of stealing alcohol from Tesco in Cliftonville on February 28.

Jack Smith, 46, was arrested and has since been charged with the offence and fined in court.

Lastly, on Sunday, police saw a man near St Paul's Church who was a suspect in another shoplifting investigation in the area. He was also arrested, has been charged and is due before court later this month.

Inspector Richard Batten said: “Community policing is all about listening to the public and responding to their concerns – and that's exactly what we're doing in Cliftonville.

“We know that people are worried about antisocial behaviour in the area, we have identified those believed to be responsible, and we will take action against them when appropriate.

“I hope those involved will improve their behaviour, but if they do not, they will face increasingly serious consequences for their offences.”
