Former MP Craig Mackinlay, who lost his hands and feet following a battle with sepsis, has shared footage of his remarkable recovery, one year on.
The former South Thanet representative, who is now a Lord, released footage of him training in a gym 12 months after he was rushed to hospital and put into a 16-day induced coma.
His wife was told he only had a 5% chance of survival. He underwent a quadruple amputation in December and returned to the House of Commons in May.
Previously he had said the road to recovery had been “slow” and that life would “never be the same again.”
But speaking in a video posted on X today, he said: “Well, a year ago, I was very unwell; I was having a septic shock.
“I didn’t think a year later I’d be seeing the inside of a gym, so this is something new for me, and you know what, I’m thoroughly enjoying it.”
Viewers took to the comments to express their admiration for the “bionic” politician.
Hazel Ingleton said: “You’re an inspiration, Craig. Keep up the good work!”
Another added: “Very brave, a true inspiration.”
Earlier this week, the 57-year-old father-of-one called for better aftercare for sepsis survivors.
Although he praised the NHS for his treatment while he was in hospital, he was “not quite so complimentary” about his care months after his acute illness.
In August, the newly appointed peer, whose roots are in the Medway towns, also appeared on a special edition of the Kent Politics Podcast where he spoke at length about his battle recovering from sepsis.
He also shared his views of the Conservative leadership race and predicted who would take over his former party.
