A photo of burnt roast potatoes has sparked a social media spat after being posted by a displeased Toby Carvery customer.

The blackened spuds were snapped by Laura Heskett who, on a visit to the restaurant near Westwood Cross, was disgusted at the offering, branding the tatties "dry, nasty things".

Taking to Facebook to share her outrage on Monday evening, Laura wrote: "Toby Carvery expecting us to eat roasties like these" accompanied with a thumbs down emoji.

But the post soon turned into a hotbed for debate, attracting more than 100 comments - with many questioning why she chose the potatoes.

Defending her complaint, Laura, who lives in Ramsgate, responded to critics saying "please don't insult my intelligence by thinking I would pick these over nicer ones".

She added: "Obviously the whole lot looked like this trust me I picked the least burnt ones believe it or not.

"Even the waitress was disgusted and gave us one meal free."

Other diners however, who ate at the restaurant on the same day, praised the potatoes.

Karina Barker commented: "We ate there tonight and the roast potatoes were lush, I like mine crispy like that. But if I didn't, I just wouldn't have picked them.

"There was another choice - don't get the potatoes.

"No one forced you to put them on your plate. They didn't miraculously appear there, you put them there, then complained about them.

"I don't like raw fish, but I don't go ordering sushi then complaining about it, I just don't eat it."

Laura hit back, writing: "Can I just state that yes some of you ate there tonight and yours were lush, good for you, but what I am saying is that they decided that serving potatoes made of wood would be okay for their customers rather than making fresh.

"These were on my friends plate, she usually likes them well crisped but these were practically hollow."

The row ground to a halt when an admin for the Facebook group where the photo was shared turned off comments on the post.

When contacted by KentOnline about the post, a spokesman for Toby Carvery said: "All our roast potatoes are peeled, chopped, and cooked fresh throughout the day."
