Green Broadstairs home for sale after featuring on Tinie Tempah’s Channel 4 property show Extraordinary Extensions

A home which sparked furious opposition due to its green-brick extension is on the market just months after appearing on Tinie Tempah’s property show.

Interior designer Karim Mezeli and his partner Carly told the Extraordinary Extensions presenter about their project to build a £300,000 extension to change the orientation of the Broadstairs four-bed house so it faced the sea.

The couple wanted to “complement” the 1960s end-of-terrace in Wings Close by building the double-storey extension with a unique green-glazed brick in homage to a style historically associated with UK pubs.

But the home – named The Green Wing – is already on the market for a guide price of up to £1 million just months after the Channel 4 programme aired.

The Ben Morris Property listing states: “The premium green-glazed brick fronted house unfolds over two light-filled levels, with a focus on connection to the sea and garden from every angle.

“The entrance hall is grounded by natural cork flooring, leading into an expansive open-plan kitchen and dining space framed by full-width bi-folding doors.

“These open onto a raised sea-view terrace, offering a seamless transition to outdoor living—ideal for al fresco dining, entertaining, or simply taking in the sound of the waves.”

The extension sparked fury among neighbours when plans were tabled with Thanet District Council back in 2021 – with concerns over it blocking their sea views and being out of keeping with the area.

But despite several objections being lodged, the planning application was approved.

The Channel 4 show aired in December and followed Karim and Carly’s ambitious project.

Show host and rapper Tinie Tempah tells viewers: “While there is much to love, there is one aspect they are really not feeling.

“The front of the house and the heart of the home look onto an uninspiring side road.”

In the programme, Carly tells Tinie she “knew instantly all my dreams had come true” when she stood in the garden facing the sea during a first viewing of the house.

Karim adds: “We love the idea of the kids growing up and their view being the lifeboat going up and down. It’s just quite dreamlike.”

Speaking about the green-blazed brick, Carly says: “I think at first, I was a little bit shocked and wasn’t sure but it has definitely grown on me.

“Traditionally, it has been used in pubs and restaurants, so using it on a house is a radical thing to do and therefore makes it more exciting.”

Karim tells viewers he believes it is the first domestic project in the UK which uses glazed bricks.

The property listing states the house has four bedrooms, two dedicated home offices, an open-plan kitchen, a wraparound garden with two sheds and off-street parking.

The same episode featured another controversial Kent property, which was likened to a “spaceship” by disgruntled neighbours.

They told Tinie they were left shocked after winning permission to overhaul a modest Sandgate bungalow into a ‘Miami Vice’ style home.

But in 2023, Folkestone and Hythe District Council (FHDC) formally apologised to those complaining about the scale of the new property, called Heatherbank, after an admin blunder left them in the dark about building plans.

Before Channel 4’s show aired neighbours slammed the building for “looking like a spaceship”, with some calling it a “shed on steroids” and out of keeping with the surroundings.

Some neighbours of the large modern building say they learned about the development only after speaking to workers on the construction site in June 2022.

Following a string of complaints to FHDC it emerged an admin error meant letters were not sent out informing residents of proposed changes.

And while a single planning notice was displayed in Sunnyside Road, those who overlook the home in nearby streets were not made aware of the application, residents say.

It reportedly led to the plans being green-lit with little opposition due to many residents being unaware of them, according to neighbours.
