Licence review of Faith and Strangers in Cliftonville to be held after noise complaints

Almost 130 people have thrown their support behind a popular music venue which is due to have its licence reviewed over noise complaints.

Residents living in flats above Faith in Strangers in Cliftonville claim they are having to live with loud music, drunken cheering, whooping and general noise disturbance.

But supporters of the premises - described as a 'venue for music, art, ideas and good vibes' - say it is a key cultural and community-focused business in the area, which also provides space for people to work from during the day.

In council documents, lawyers Woos Whur, speaking on behalf of the disgruntled residents, say their clients "suffer from audible noise disturbance from the music played at the premises from 7pm".

"From 9pm they can feel the bass and are able to hear strong melodies and lyrics," the firm said.

"This noise continues to get louder and create more of a disturbance as more patrons enter the premises.

"It is impossible to relax and enjoy a normal home life with this continuing disturbance.

'By 1am the noise is so debilitating'

"It is not even possible to watch television, listen to music or read a book. They then have to live with drunken cheering, whooping, scraping of furniture, use of electric hand dryers in the bathrooms and general noise disturbance.

"By 1am the noise is so debilitating and continues until about 2.30am that sleep becomes impossible."

But supporters highlight the importance of the 350-capacity venue - which was formerly Frank's nightclub - and say it is quieter than other night spots.

An unnamed Margate district councillor wrote a submission, adding weight to the other 126 letters of support.

"I have been to numerous events at Faith in Strangers and compared with other nightclubs such as Kabuki in Margate or clubs in Canterbury, I have always found the noise a bit too quiet," they said.

"Obviously I don’t live above the nightclub, but I believe they are already very sensitive to their location and are doing everything they can.

"I wanted them to open the balcony up and allow smoking as an example, but they will not allow it."

In documents due to be discussed at a meeting of the licensing sub committee, Faith in Strangers, which was served an abatement notice due to noise, said it had taken measures to alleviate some of the concerns, including rubber feet on chair legs and a dispersal policy to customers.

A review hearing was due to be held on Thursday but was adjourned.
