Derelict graffiti-hit loos in Margate to become plush apartments with sea views

A derelict toilet block strewn in mess and graffiti is set to be revamped into plush apartments with sea views.

Arcvelop Architecture launched plans to overhaul the former Thanet District Council (TDC) owned lavatories in Margate into two one-bedroom flats in December.

Now, the proposals have taken a stride forward after the authority approved the bid to overhaul the abandoned building adjacent to Sea View Terrace.

Documents lodged with the council said: "The inside of the building is in a dilapidated condition.

"The facade of the building is also in a state of disrepair, displaying graffiti, boarded-up windows and cracks in the stucco.”

The developers will now begin the task of restoring the site's windows, doors and other parts of the building.

Papers added: "The existing structure has the potential to be fully restored [and] the proposed internal layouts provide a high-quality living accommodation for all future residents."

The derelict toilet block, which overlooks the beach at Westbrook, along from Margate Main Sands, was sold off by Thanet District Council (TDC) in 2015.

Both homes are to come with an open plan space with large living, dining and kitchen amenities.

However, no parking spaces are included at the site - which forms part of the Margate Seafront Conservation Area 1997.

The building was sold by TDC ten years ago for £215,000, and two years later plans by owners Ashley and James Bryant for a two-storey three bedroom house were approved.

However in 2021, the plot was again on the market with a guide price of £230,000.
