A “legendary” baker who played a vital role in producing and supplying the Kentish Gypsy Tart has died.
Michael Dicks from Broadstairs - known as Mr Crustie - supplied Asda and Morrisons with the popular dessert, as well as local stockists.
The 82-year-old, who ran Crusties Bakery, also helped in the community through his role as president of the Rotary Club of Broadstairs, dressing up as Santa at Christmas to raise money for charity.
Mr Dicks began baking in the 1980s, eventually running a head office and shop on Pysons Road Industrial Estate in Broadstairs, a branch on the high street, and another in Harbour Street, Ramsgate.
They produce various types of classic and speciality bread, cakes and pastries, including the Kentish Gypsy Tart, which originated from the Isle of Sheppey.
Steve Lawrence, owner of burger restaurant Please Sir! in Broadstairs High Street, paid tribute to Mr Dicks, who died on Thursday.
“It’s with great sadness and a heavy heart to say goodbye to such an inspiration of mine,” he said.
“I’ve known Michael for a majority of my life and he amongst a few other business owners supported and guided me when I first opened.
“I will never forget where and how Please Sir! began and I am eternally grateful for all Michael has done for me.
“He was a champion in business and a hero in the town. One of the most genuine and loveable people I know. He will be sorely missed!”
Mr Dicks died peacefully following a recent illness. He leaves behind his family and wife, Sheila.
