by Katie Davis and Jack Dyson

A 37-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the deaths of two children discovered at a house near Margate.

Police were called to the end-of-terrace home in Castle Drive, Westwood, at 3.35am this morning after concerns were raised about the welfare of those inside.

Two young children were taken to hospital, where their deaths were confirmed.

The woman arrested, who is from Margate, was involved in a car crash on the A299 Thanet Way at about 2.50am this morning.

She was taken taken to the William Harvey Hospital with minor head injuries and later arrested on suspicion of murder.

She has since been discharged from hospital and taken into police custody.

Detectives and forensics officers remain at the scene in Castle Drive, a new-build estate on the outskirts of Margate.

It is understood those at the house had not lived there long.

One neighbour said: "They moved in about a month ago. We never really saw them, and we didn't really know them."

John Cassettari, 34, who lives on the estate, said: "It's one of those neighbourhoods where everyone keeps themselves to themselves.

"I only speak to my neighbours, but not to have a chat to or anything like that - just to say 'hello' .

"I'm very shocked this has happened. I have a three-year-old daughter inside and I couldn't imagine that happening. It's just wrong."

Another neighbour added: "It's a really quiet area. No one speaks to each other apart from immediate neighbours. It's a horrible thing that's happened. We didn't know anything about it until about 3pm today when the police came to ask us some questions."

The arrested woman remains in custody. Investigations are ongoing.
