Former Manston Airfield Market to reopen as The Oval Saturday Market at new home at The Oval Bandstand in Cliftonville

The new location of a popular market left homeless after it was axed by airport bosses has been revealed.

The former weekly Manston Airfield Market, which was held at Manston Airport, was cancelled last month.

Some 40 to 60 stalls had traded on land outside the former departure lounge.

Originally operated by Bray Markets, it was taken over by Stevens Markets a few weeks before its closure.

In May, it broke the news that it was being permanently closed, blaming Thanet District Council for blocking necessary planning permission and sparking an online backlash from visitors and stallholders.

However, it then emerged that the decision was actually taken by the airport itself.

The weekly event had become a hit with visitors with hundreds attending each week.

Now, it has been announced that the new location of the market, which will now be called The Oval Saturday Market, will be at The Oval Bandstand and Lawns in Cliftonville.

StevensMarkets Ltd has partnered with GRASS Cliftonville CIC to provide the new home for the event, which is only 10 minutes from its old site in Manston.

It will be located on the lawns on the clifftops of Walpole Bay and will have fully accessible pedestrian footpaths.

Stevens Markets also says the market is being “carefully managed to ensure it complements other site activities, including GRASS’s events programme and community café.”

The new market will operate every Saturday between 8.30am and 3pm and will feature a wide array of stalls.

Simon Bell, director of GRASS Cliftonville CIC said: “We’re thrilled to welcome the traders and regulars of the former Manston Market to Cliftonville.

“The Oval has a long tradition of hosting markets and community events, and is ideally suited to this type of activity with fantastic support from the local community.

“We’re proud to offer a new home for the market on this iconic clifftop site and look forward to seeing it thrive.”

StevensMarkets Ltd directors Michael Stevens and Leslie Stevens added: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with GRASS Cliftonville CIC on this exciting new venture.

“The Oval is a stunning location and we’re committed to building a high-quality, friendly and inclusive market that serves both locals and visitors alike.”

The Thanet airfield had been hosting the weekly Manston Airfield Market since the end of last summer, prior to multi-million pound work getting underway on transforming the site into a cargo airport.

At the time of the closure, airport owners RiverOak Strategic Partners (RSP) did not elaborate on the reasons for the sudden closure, saying: “Manston Airport and the operators of the Saturday market have decided to part company by mutual consent. It is understood that the market is now pursuing other sites in east Kent.”

A spokesperson for TDC added: “The market needs planning permission to continue to operate on the Manston Airport site. Council officers contacted the operator and requested a planning application, to change the use of the land.

“To date, an application has not been received and therefore no application has been rejected.”

The new market in Cliftonville is set to open on Saturday, June 21. To inquire about stall availability contact 07971 738239.
