Bosses of Power nightclub in The Centre, Margate, want to ‘bring the London clubbing vibe’ to Kent

The bosses of a new nightclub are promising to “bring the London clubbing vibe” to Kent.

Power is in The Centre, Margate, and welcomed its first customers last Friday.

Owner Lexi Mac has fond memories of visiting Dreamland and the beach as a child and has wanted to open a club in the town for years.

She had worked in the capital in entertainment and helping set up new night-time venues before moving to Kent two years ago.

Power, which occupies the former Cry Baby bar, is her first solo venture.

The 35-year-old said: “I'm trying to bring the London clubbing vibe to Margate.

“I'm not forcing it, but I want to show them how an all-singing, all-dancing club works, like back in the day, and see if we can get it back again.”

The unit is close to late-night venue Justine’s, which is run by Carl Barat of The Libertines.

Until it opened up in 2023, Margate was without a nightclub.

Another nearby venue, Fusion in Cliftonville, has opened - although its bid for a premises licence was rejected by Thanet District Council last week.

Miss Mac said: “My own experience going out and what I’ve seen is that people are a bit nervous to go out to Margate because there's only one or two places open late.

“They go to Ramsgate or Canterbury.”

The number of nightclubs in Kent has sadly depleted since the glory days of the 1990s and early Noughties.

Miss Max added: “It's such a shame. There are so many empty places here and there are so many places that shut at 10 or 11.”

“I want to say ‘No, you can stay in Margate, use our food places and our hotels’.

“We've got to help each other with the nightlife.

“If we want the money to increase down here, we need things to stay open later.”

The music planned for Power will be mostly grime, rap and R ‘n’ B on Friday nights, with a broader range on Saturday nights - from party classics to garage.

In the daytime, the venue will serve as a bar, with the club anthems starting from 7pm.

Downstairs, there is a private room with capacity for 36 people.

To begin with, it will be open Thursday to Sunday, closing at midnight.

Miss Mac said: “We've applied for 3am close, which we've been told shouldn't be too much of a problem.”

When it’s not filled with punters, Miss Mac is opening up the venue to community groups and hiring it out to local businesses.

“We don’t want to be just a club from London,” Miss Mac added.

“We want to be part of Margate - we want to be part of the community.”

It will also be an inclusive venue, with a zero-tolerance policy on bullying of any kind.
