Mum's petition for safe crossing on Margate Road in Ramsgate after son hit by car

A mum has recalled the horrifying moment she saw her little boy covered in blood and losing consciousness after being hit by a car as he walked home from school.

Gemma Bellingham's son Lincoln was airlifted to hospital after being seriously injured as he crossed Margate Road in Ramsgate on his way back from the lower site of the Royal Harbour Academy.

The 11-year-old suffered a fractured skull, severe bruising, multiple cuts to his face and legs, and injuries to his ribs during the incident in January.

Mum Gemma has now launched a petition demanding a safe crossing be put in place on the "dangerous" highway.

She says Lincoln had been attempting to get across the busy road - just after Newlands Road, near to the viaduct - by crossing to one of the islands. But he was hit before he made it.

She quickly rushed to the scene to find her little boy covered in blood and losing consciousness.

"He was put on a stretcher and had head supports to keep his neck and head in place," Gemma recalls.

"His face was cut and covered in blood. Paramedics had to cut his clothes off him and he was falling in and out of consciousness.

"As his mother this was beyond horrific and traumatic for me to see and horrific for my little boy to go through.

"I know it has also had an effect on many people, be it the teachers that ran down to help, the person driving the car, other students or people passing that witnessed it.

"My son's older sibling walked past the incident and didn’t know it was his brother until he got home and my husband told him. All of my children have been shaken up by this event."

Lincoln was taken to the QEQM hospital and then airlifted to Kings College Hospital in London where he underwent scans, X-rays and had multiple stitches to his head.

Gemma says he is recovering well and doesn't remember much of the actual accident.

But she admits they are all deeply shaken by it and terrified it could happen again to one of the many children crossing the road, going to and from the Royal Harbour Academy and other schools.

In a petition to Kent County Council, which is responsible for highways, she makes a plea for a crossing to be put in place on Margate Road, between Newlands Road and the viaduct.

"It is extremely dangerous and I have no doubt it will happen again," she said.

"I never want a parent to experience what I did or a child to experience what my son did. Next time the person might not be so lucky.

"Please do something so no one else ever has to see their child hidden by a green screen and in the road covered in blood.

"Please help me and other parents and children and get a safe crossing there for them."

A Kent County Council said: "As with all fatal and serious crashes, Kent Police undertake a robust investigation to ascertain any causation factors in such incidents.

"The findings are made known to KCC, which upon advice from the police and the county coroner where necessary, undertakes any highway engineering work deemed necessary to help avoid further incidents.

"Our Road Safety Team will be contacting the school to offer road safety training to all year groups through the Youth Travel Ambassador programme.

"KCC will be completing surveys to gather data on vehicle volumes and speed, as well the number of pedestrians crossing the road at this point to help inform our plan going forward."
