Fire at home of former wrestling star Jackie Pallo near Haine Road, Ramsgate

Firefighters tackled a blaze at the former home of a famous wrestler this afternoon.

Ozengell Farmhouse belonged to late entertainment sensation Jackie 'Mr Tv' Pallo who thrilled crowds throughout his wrestling career - and in 1969 was even crowned Middleweight Champion.

He owned the now derelict building on Haine Road in Ramsgate until his death in 2008 aged 80.

The fire broke out just after midday with crews bringing three fire engines and a height vehicle to help put out the flames.

The building is close to the Lord of the Manor roundabout, and the A256 was closed for around three hours.

It led to queues building from Canterbury Road West (Cliffsend) to B2050 Manton Road.

No injuries have been reported and the cause is not yet known.

This is the second fire to break out in the late wrestler's property - the first being in 2018 and it has been derelict ever since.

Mont Blanc Developments had plans to convert the building into six properties but have been snubbed by Thanet District Council three times - the first being in 2019.

The council's decision was based on pedestrian safety along Haine Road, which currently has no footpath near the proposed site.
