Ramsgate: Thanet schools take part in Rio Olympics 2016 parade

Vibrant colours, beating drums, animal masks and footballs were on display in a Ramsgate school yesterday.

Seven schools from across the Isle gathered at Chatham and Clarendon Grammar School to participate in a Rio Olympics inspired parade.

Pupils have been creating Rio-themed cardboard and paper creations such as pineapples, footballs and parrots in art workshops over the last few weeks.

Pupils from Priory Infants, Bromstone Primary, Cliftonville Primary, Northdown Primary, Holy Trinity Primary and Laleham Gap schools took part in the parade at 11am.

Former GB Olympic swimmer Chris Cook led the children around the field and gave them a talk about life as an athlete and took questions about the Olympic Games.

The parade was held exactly one month before the 2016 Rio Olympics are due to begin.

The scheme called Inspired Ways to Rio aimed to involve children in programmes and activities leading up to the Rio games and was started by Kent County Council.

Schools, former Olympians and Paralympians, Kent art organisations and the county's wellbeing service all took part.
