Officers were called to the scene shortly after 2pm with witnesses saying the area - just yards from the town's Christmas fair - was "swarming with police".

Part of the area around the junction with Station Road and Eastfield Road was cordoned off.

Police spokesman James Walker said a man arrested remains in custody.

"Our inquiries are ongoing and there have been no further arrests," he added.

The stabbing is understood to be an isolated incident and not connected to the village's Christmas celebrations.
