Jason Wood from Margate jailed after vicious attack on woman and for committing multiple other offences

A thug who punched a woman 30 times in the face, kicked her head, then held a smashed bottle to her throat has been jailed.

Jason Wood also repeatedly kicked Tiffany East in the face before raising a broken beer bottle to her throat, as she lay dazed in the street in Margate.

The “remorseless” 30-year-old was jailed at Canterbury Crown Court for nine years and four months for the “sickening assault”, alongside drugs and other offences.

The violence unfolded when party guests spilled onto the street after Wood bit Miss East’s bottom at a gathering in December 2020.

After subjecting her to the sustained assault, Wood repeatedly punched Michael Hodgetts until he fell.

He then repeatedly kicked Mr Hodgetts until he fell unconscious.

As the pair tried to stagger away Wood remonstrated with a neighbour, chased and punched his victims again.

"It was vicious uncontrolled and cowardly violence against someone who was not aggressive to you..."

The attack came amid a mini-crime wave where he would be tasered twice in as many years.

In December 2019, officers discovered Wood, then wanted for separate alleged offences, hiding in his then partner’s attic at an address in Margate.

“Police noticed the loft hatch was slightly open with a ladder placed against the wall,” prosecutor Andrew Judge said.

“PC Wheeler climbed the ladder and immediately saw the defendant hiding in the loft.

“The officer drew his taser and there was a stand-off.”

Wood “shoved” PC Wheeler, resulting in cuts and grazes, then wrestled with a number of officers before being restrained with a taser and pepper spray, Mr Judge continued.

Then in November 2021, police patrols spotted Wood on a stolen motorcycle in Margate reportedly dealing drugs, the prosecutor said.

“Officers attempted to arrest the defendant from the bike but he made off on foot.

“A taser was used by police to detain him.”

Just under five grams of crack cocaine was discovered, alongside £3,750, an 8cm blade lock knife, crack pipe, and clip bag containing cannabis.

After watching CCTV footage of the December 2020 attack, the judge, recorder Michael Turner said: “It was vicious uncontrolled and cowardly violence against someone who was not aggressive to you.

“You inflicted around 20 to 30 separate punches to her face over seven or eight minutes, then subsequently four to six kicks to her face.

“When you had knocked her to the ground and left her dazed and confused you got a broken beer bottle and you used the broken neck of the bottle threatening her with it, jabbing it to her throat, although you did not use the weapon.”

He went on: “The assault didn’t end there.

“In a completely unprovoked attack you punched (Mr Hodgetts) multiple times and once on the ground kicked him multiple times, and by reason of your kicks knocked him unconscious.”

Wood, who has 12 previous convictions for 18 offences, had shown “no remorse,” the judge added.

Appearing via video-link from HMP Elmley, Wood repeatedly asked for clarity on the length of his sentence throughout the hearing.

Wood, previously of Nash Lane, Margate, pleaded guilty at earlier hearings to two counts of attempted GBH, possession with intent to supply a Class A drug, assaulting an emergency worker, cannabis possession, resisting arrest, two bail offences, possession of a knife and driving without a licence or insurance.

Kerry Waitt, mitigating, said Wood had since taken steps to come off drugs and was using his time constructively to avoid a life of criminality.
