The collision involving three vehicles happened at the junction of Manston Road and Shottendane Road just before 7pm on November 1.

A police search was carried out after the incident, assisted by the coastguard helicopter, in an effort to locate the driver of one of the cars.

Mum-of-one Amy Taylor, also from Birchington, was one of the people involved in the crash and spent two weeks in hospital with a broken neck, spine and pelvis.

The 34-year-old is now home and recovering from her injuries.

She was rushed to the William Harvey Hospital once freed from her car.

She has been told by medics it will take at least nine months before she has recovered physically from her serious injuries.

“I’m at home now finally and struggling mentally more then anything,” she said.

“I’m having nightmares most nights."

Miss Taylor, 34, who says she can not bear to see the wreckage of her car or drive again, says she was unable to feel her legs when she was trapped.

“I still can’t feel my left leg and my right one goes numb when I’ve pushed too hard,” she said.

“The bottoms of my feet are also numb.

“I’m not used to not being able to get on and do something as simple as Hoover the sugar I’ve dropped on the floor because of the pain,” she said.

“I can’t get in or out of my bath on my own.

“Loud bangs are also frightening me.”

A police spokesman confirmed they have made an arrest.

"A 25-year-old woman from Birchington was arrested today in connection with the collision and currently remains in custody," they said.
