Entire Year 11 group at Dane Court Grammar School in Broadstairs sent home to self-isolate

Yet another school has had to send a whole year group home to self-isolate due to confirmed cases of coronavirus.

Year 11s at Dane Court Grammar School in Broadstairs must stay at home until November 30.

The decision was taken after a number of positive tests and due to a large number of pupils isolating as well as staff shortages caused by teachers having to self-isolate.

Head teacher Martin Jones wrote to parents stating it had led to the decision to keep the entire year group at home.

"Due to the timing of the return of positive results, students will be able to return to school on Monday, November 30, unless they have been instructed to isolate for a longer period or they are feeling unwell," he said.

Work is being provided to students online.

This latest case follows several in Thanet this week, with five whole year groups sent home across three schools.

The Royal Harbour Academy (RHA) in Ramsgate, Hartsdown Academy in Margate and Holy Trinity and St John's Church of England Primary School in Margate are all affected.

In a letter from RHA, parents were informed of a number of cases of coronavirus in Year 10, with head teacher Simon Pullen making the decision to send all pupils in that year group home to self-isolate until November 30.

A further letter was sent out, asking all Year 8 students to also isolate until the same date.

"The school has followed Public Health England (PHE) instructions and ensured that students who may have been exposed to the virus have self-isolated.

"This has meant that the vast majority of the year group are now self-isolating and I have taken the decision to ask the rest to self-isolate."

At Hartsdown, Year 9 and Year 11 pupils have been sent home until December 4 - just as the Year 7s returned to school after 14 days off.

In Margate, Holy Trinity and St John's primary notified parents of a positive Covid case in the Year 4 bubble.

In an email, parents were asked to collect their children "as soon as possible" from the school office and to isolate until November 27, returning to school on November 30.

Many schools and nurseries across the isle have had to send bubbles of children home since term started in September, with the number of cases increasing in recent weeks.

Ursuline College in Westgate put in place a full two-week closure due to a high number of staff having to self-isolate and more than 20 confirmed cases in the school.
