Margate eye record 11th successive away Isthmian South East win at AFC Croydon Athletic this weekend

Margate’s current crop are out to further cement their place in the club’s record books.

Fourth-placed Gate will travel to AFC Croydon in Isthmian South East on Saturday, having seen Tuesday’s trip to Sittingbourne called off and pushed back a week.

It means Margate can earn an impressive 11th straight away league victory at the Mayfield Stadium.

“It’s a tough place to go,” said Gate player-boss Ben Greenhalgh on their game against Keith Millen’s men.

“We actually watched the Croydon versus Sevenoaks game (a 2-0 victory for them this month). Especially at this time of year, it’ll be a really difficult game.

“We can get an 11th away win in a row on Saturday. I believe the previous record was eight or nine.

"But they have got a very good team. They always have a few random results where they beat teams that we don’t expect they would.

“It’ll be a challenge on Saturday - but also, a chance to really cement our place in the club’s record books.”

Among AFC Croydon’s ranks are one-time Premier League forward Brandon Pierrick, leading the way for them with 18 goals this season, as well as ex-Margate winger Kadell Daniel and experienced midfielder James Dunne. He’s joined from Ashford.

Greenhalgh said: “They have got Kadell.

“We had him at Margate last year and know how good he can be. They have just signed James Dunne, who’s a very good central midfielder.

“They will probably be better than their league position suggests, but we’ll give it another good go.”

Gate remain well-placed in the play-off positions and on course to surpass both of the targets they set out for the season.

“It’s just about not being complacent,” said Greenhalgh.

“Our aim from the start of the season was to get to 75 points - we’re five wins away from that - and our other target of two points-per-game this season, we’re four points ahead of that ratio.

“We had a difficult January where we probably didn’t play as well as we should have done but, hopefully now, we’re heading back in the right direction.”

Margate saw Tuesday’s trip to Sittingbourne fall victim to the weather.

Greenhalgh said: “We knew the weather had been bad lately so we sort of expected it. It’s not in our hands.

“If games need to be called off, they need to be called off.

“We had played well on Saturday, so we were happy to have another game, but we’ll just train on Tuesday and Thursday.

“Those extra training sessions worked last week and, hopefully, we can do the same again before Saturday.”

Incredibly, Gate are yet to face promotion rivals and FA Trophy quarter-finalists Sittingbourne this term.

A war of words broke out between Brickies boss Ryan Maxwell and the Margate hierarchy after last month’s meeting at Hartsdown Park had been postponed. The Thanet team cited electrical issues for the postponement while Maxwell claimed Margate hadn’t wanted to play due to a player shortage on that occasion.

“The game at home has been rearranged numerous times, mainly because of their FA Trophy run,” explained Greenhalgh.

“I think we were initially due to play them twice before Christmas! But it makes it more interesting.

“They’re pushing Ramsgate for the title but, also, they know they still have to play us twice.

"It’s similar for us in terms of securing a play-off place.”

Greenhalgh’s team had secured a 3-0 home win against Lancing last weekend through a goal from their player-manager before top scorer Ibrahim Olutade’s brace.

The 32-year-old said: “Saturday was brilliant.

"Where we’re a new group and we’ve brought in some new players, we probably needed these extra training sessions.

"We have managed to train properly three times together recently, which is hard to do.

"We had just dropped off a little bit.”

Playmaker Greenhalgh’s free-kick just before half-time was his 13th goal this season while Olutade took his tally to 21.

Alfie Paxman led the way in frontrunners Ramsgate’s 4-1 Isthmian South East home win against relegation-threatened Phoenix Sports last weekend.

Defender Aaron Barnes had promptly equalised for Ben Smith’s side while a penalty from Joe Taylor - his 40th goal of the season - sandwiched wideman Paxman’s brace.

All the goals came after experienced Ramsgate midfielder Lee Martin and away forward Isaac Thompson had been dismissed midway through the first period.

Ramsgate are at play-off occupants Sheppey this weekend before Tuesday’s scheduled journey to Broadbridge Heath.
