Ramsgate coach Darren Beale concerned for his players’ safety during Isthmian South East leaders’ 5-0 win over Littlehampton

Darren Beale says he was concerned for the safety of Ramsgate players during their big victory over Littlehampton.

The Isthmian South East leaders were subjected to some rough treatment from their struggling visitors at Southwood on Saturday.

The Rams won 5-0, with doubles for Joe Taylor and Alfie Paxman, plus a goal on his home debut for Jefferson Aibangbee.

But coach Beale was disappointed to see forward TJ Jadama sent off as he tried to defend himself under attack from away keeper Mac Chisholm with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Chisholm was also dismissed but Beale felt Jadama was unfortunate to see red, seeing him very much as the innocent party.

“We knew what game we were going to get, based on playing them midweek down at theirs a few weeks ago,” said Beale.

“It was a game I felt could have been controlled a bit better by the officials, certainly the one in the middle.

“Some of the tackles and things off the ball, we knew that was the sort of game they were going to bring.

“I think it was after their fourth goal, their keeper’s absolutely lost it with one of his centre-halves, so you can see he’s not happy.

“He’s frustrated and then it’s something and nothing with TJ, who’s been flagged offside, and the keeper has totally lost it.

“I don’t see what else TJ can do other than the action he took which was to stop himself getting hurt.

“That was something I was concerned about before the game, the safety of our players.

“Their goalkeeper’s gone in windmilling. He can’t stand there and let him carry on.

“It was a definite red for the keeper and, at worst, a yellow for TJ.

“These things happen and we’ve all been in football long enough to know officials have a hard job and they don’t always get it right.”

It was a third 5-0 victory in four home games for Ramsgate, while they also won by the same scoreline at Three Bridges last month.

Ben Smith’s side are on a run of seven consecutive victories since drawing at Margate on Boxing Day and they’ve won 24 of their 27 league games, with two draws and just one defeat.

“We’re pleased, especially with the home form,” said Beale.

“We seem to be playing really well at home.

“That’s not to say we aren’t away but it’s nice to play in front of a bigger crowd and play the football we know we can on the 3G.

“We’ve got a bit of a thing going with scoring five goals at the moment, which hopefully we can continue.

“I’ve worked with quite a few teams but I think the last time I worked with a team this consistent was at Dover with Andy Hessenthaler when we went winning leagues back-to-back.

“They’re a great bunch of lads but performance-wise, they’ve got that winning mentality, whoever’s in the starting XI or finishes the game.”

Beale was delighted to see Paxman move on to 11 goals for the season, his double including a spectacular free-kick.

He was also pleased to see Aibangbee get off the mark at Southwood following his arrival from Sevenoaks last month.

“I worked with Jeff at Faversham,” said Beale.

“I know what he brings, he’s got an eye for goal and he knows where the back of the net is.

“He’s fitted in well, apart from his singing, which hasn’t been great. He had to redo his initiation song.

“He’s been playing regularly at Sevenoaks and he knows, coming to Ramsgate, that everyone’s fighting for their places.

“When you bring someone like Jeff in, it’s putting pressure on others to perform week in, week out.

“He had a really bad injury at Faversham and was out for a long time.

“What’s really nice for him is he’s worked hard to come back and he’s got back to where he was before the injury.”

Ramsgate host relegation battlers Phoenix Sports at Southwood this Saturday (3pm).

Beale has paid tribute to those behind the scenes who help Smith’s title-chasing side get ready for games.

“Sean Hill does a lot of work,” said Beale.

“His analysis is tremendous and there’s a couple of university lads, Ollie and Tyler, who feed in all the stats for me and Sean to take a look at and break down.

“They deserve a lot of credit for the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.”
