Inspirational Ramsgate fan Ronnie Megrath has died from motor neurone disease at the age of 66.

Megrath was a much-loved figure at Southwood, hugely popular with everyone at the club.

The players took him to their hearts as he battled illness, joining supporters on his fundraising walk for the Motor Neurone Disease Association last season.

Manager Ben Smith was particularly close with Megrath, seeking him out after Ramsgate clinched the Isthmian South East title at Hythe last season.

Smith said last month the team were playing for Megrath as his health deteriorated.

“It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of Ronnie Megrath,” said a club statement.

“Ronnie passed peacefully with his family by his side after a 20-month battle with motor neurone disease.

“On behalf of the club, we want to send our love and condolences to his wife Claire, Les, Rachel, Anthony, Debbie and Graham, as well as all of the friends and family of Ronnie.

“Ronnie was an inspiration to us all, he was a driving force behind every point home and away in last season’s title-winning campaign. He will be missed by us all.

“Ronnie Megrath, forever a Ram.”
