A statement read: "It is with real sadness that the management committee of the Oast has decided to bow to the inevitable and close the theatre for an indeterminate period.

"This is to protect our audiences and our members alike.

"We sincerely hope we will be able to open our doors again after the threat of coronavirus has subsided.

"We wish all our members and regular visitors well and look forward to welcoming you all back when it is safe to do so.

"If you have booked tickets for future productions the box office will contact you as soon as possible

"Wardrobe and props hires will cease until further notice.

"We look forward to seeing you all again when this emergency is over."

The theatre had been due to stage Emil and the Detectives from April 1.
