A long-derelict patch of land could be brought back into use after a plans for a trade park were approved by councillors.

The former Colas site in Tonbridge, next to the Royal Mail delivery office, has been empty for almost 30 years.

It is hoped the proposed Tonbridge Trade Park development of 15 new industrial units, situated at the junction of Vale Road and the A26, will not only rejuvenate the plot but also create jobs.

The scheme in the Medway ward of the town was granted permission by a Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council (TMBC) planning committee, passing unanimously when voted on.

Cllr Matt Boughton, vice chairman of the Tonbridge area planning committee, said: "The old Colas site has been an eyesore for too long and we are delighted to ensure that the land will be put to good use with an excellent development, which will respect the local environment extremely well."

Councillors granted the developers permission for the scheme subject to a number of conditions, including the provision of 71 cycle parking spaces, potential for a new cycle route around the site, and solar panels incorporated into the roof of the development.

Contamination of the site from its use as a tar distillery years ago meant it was not safe for houses or flats to be built on the land.

Cllr James Lark, member for Medway Ward, said "The benefits of this development outweigh any negatives and I know that the whole town will welcome this.

"Fifteen new businesses will have the opportunity to move into what will be known as Tonbridge Trade Park, creating local jobs and opportunities for the community. We have always supported local business and are delighted to do so through this development."
