Second man jailed after raid on family home in Trench Road, Tonbridge

A second man has now been jailed for his part in a gang attack in Tonbridge.

Three knife-wielding raiders, wearing balaclavas and hoods, burst into the home of a family of three in Trench Road in January.

One of them, Oliver Bowles was sent to prison for seven years earlier this year for his part in the attack which netted them £290 in cash and a pouch of tobacco.

Now his accomplice, Lee Murphy, age, has been jailed for five years and eight months after admitting aggravated burglary.

The victims were threatened by the three-strong gang.

Maidstone Crown Court heard how Bowles was arrested after one of the victims recognised his voice.

Bowles, 22, and Murphy had knocked on the front door of the house before barging their way inside brandishing large kitchen knives.

But it was then that Bowles was recognised by one of the victims, a former lover, which resulted in him shouting: "Oh f*****g hell!", said prosecutor Mike Hollis.

The trio then fled after stealing around £290 from a bedroom and some tobacco but Bowles was later arrested at home in Shipbourne Road.

A pouch of tobacco believed to have been stolen during the burglary was seized.

Mr Hollis said Bowles and Murphy had visited an off-licence shortly after the crime took place, with CCTV footage showing them buying items with a bundle of cash.

Murphy, of Bondfield Close, Tunbridge Wells, also pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in public.

Tom Stern, defending, said the 22 year old had been recruited and agreed to go along.

He added that Murphy had been "drifting" at the time after a relationship with a woman in Edenbridge had ended.

Judge Tony Baumgartner also issued a court order prohibiting Murphy from going near the home of his victims.
