Tonbridge special needs Nexus school closes amid cupboard door fall risk

A special needs school has closed because of the risk of cupboard doors falling on pupils.

The Nexus School in Tonbridge announced via Facebook last night and by letter to parents this morning that it would not be open today.

In the letter, head teacher Scott Jarred explained how, after two incidents of 30kg floor to ceiling cupboard doors becoming unsafe because of failed hinges, a decision had been made to close the school until the components can be replaced.

"We have been in contact with the local authority about these issues and have been looking to replace the hinges quickly, but due to the number of hinges (over 1100) and finding suitable replacements it has not been possible," he said.

"Due to the potential risk within every classroom and after discussion with the Schools Governing Body and Area Education Officer the decision was made to close the school yesterday until the replacements can be installed.

"The safety of the students is paramount, and I am unwilling to put them at risk until the repairs have been completed. We will continue to communicate and update you of the situation and I will be asking teachers to organise work to send home."

The school is continuing to assess the problem today and is hoping to inform parents if pupils can start to return tomorrow.
