Tonbridge swimming pool celebrated its 104th birthday with free party

A swimming pool has celebrated its 104th birthday by throwing a free party for 150 swimmers.

The Tonbridge pool thanked its member and regulars for their continuous support and custom.

Recently refurbished after flooding last Christmas, the venue welcomed the first member through its doors in 1910 when siwmming was still a new and fascinating concept.

The Castle Street pool was ahead of the times becoming the UK's first outdoor heated pool, but mixed bathing wasn't allowed until 10 years later.

A new disabled changing room was built in April last year, and more recently a major refurbishment saw the installation of rubber safety flooring and reconfiguration of the changing village.

Martin Guyton, chief executive of Tonbridge and Malling Leisure Trust, said: “Tonbridge swimmers have been flocking to the pool for more than a century.

"It’s held in great affection by generations of residents and we wanted to thank all our regulars for their support, which enables us to provide residents with indoor and outdoor swimming now, and hopefully for another 100 years!”
